Lady 'Birds bring defense to softball season

      While the Lady 'Birds are in the beginning stages of a new softball season, they have many questions to address about the rest of the year. One thing seems to be almost for certain - the theme for this year's team will be defense.

Golf teams perform at Columbia
      El Campo's sub-varsity boys and girls teams competed at Columbia Lakes Feb. 5 in an invitational golf tournament hosted by West Columbia High School. The teams took on opponents from Foster, Bay City, Angleton, Edna and other schools and came through competitively.

      Some may have thought Louise was in for a down year. Injuries and struggles early in the season gave the boys basketball team more losses than they were used to, but things came together as the season continued and now, the post-season is calling.

Babe Ruth turns 50 for Wharton
      The Wharton Babe Ruth Baseball League enjoys its 50th season this year. The local league has had one 13 to 15-year-old team, one 16-year-old team and two 16 to 18-year-old team appearances in Babe Ruth World Series over the years and numerous appearances in regional tournaments.

Line Drives qualify for World Series
      This past weekend, the Line Drives played in the United States Specialty Sports Association Bay Area Baseball season opener and brought home a first-place trophy. An El Campo-based, 11-yearold select baseball team, the Line Drives compete under USSSA guidelines.

Ricebirds' season ends with Lamar loss

     For the first time in three years, the Ricebirds ended the basketball season without a playoff appearance. El Campo made the post-season in 2006 and 2007. On Tuesday, Lamar Consolidated defeated the 'Birds 75-48 to officially end El Campo's season.
