Macha speaks to gardening group about trimming hedges Members of the Green Thumb gardening club met Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the home of Marian Vick. Eighteen members answered roll call and reports were given and approved. Florence Adamitis read a humorous poem entitled "Analyzing Myself." She also read a prayer entitled "Your Tender Love." A thank you was read from Betty Konvicka for the plant given by the club in memory of her husband. The horticulture report on the Crown of Thorns was given by Agnes Sebesta This evergreen will bloom all year long. She said it will do okay indoors but prefers the outdoors in partial shade. The plant comes in multiple colors. Margaret Armatta and Margie Swoboda won the drawing for the plants. The meeting was turned over to Leon Macha for a program on plant care and pruning essentials. According to Macha, one main reason for pruning is to get rid of dead wood to enable plant growth. Macha spoke about broadleaf hedges, roses and broadleaf topiaries. He suggested trimming them back to promote new growth. He also said not to trim juniper topiaries past healthy green foliage or it will kill the plant. Nandina, oleanders and esperanza can be cut to the ground to improve appearance. Do not cut the main stems of crape myrtles, but do trim side branches. Macha said now is the time to mow and weedeat your yard for fresh growth. Macha closed with a question and answer session. The next meeting will be March 19 at the home of Mallory Guinn. |
