The Ricebirds competed in their first track meet Saturday and with a few members out, gave a decent performance in the Blackcat Relays at Bay City.Head Coach Royce Johnson said he combined boys of all levels to field a team for the meet.
"We didn't really have everybody out," Johnson said. "We had to piece together a team. We had some freshman and some JVers also running with them. We just had to put together what we could. We did OK. Our times weren't great, but we just had to have some type of competition."
The 'Birds withdrew from the Brazoswood meet scheduled for Feb. 16 because of rain and having a short time to practice with members of the basketball team.
Johnson said missing the meet hurt and put a slow start to the season.
"We use that as a practice meet before going into a regular meet," he said. "We missed out on that one. We didn't want to get anybody hurt and can't afford to get anybody hurt. Now, we're waiting on grades and that may hurt us a little bit as far as numbers, but our athletes are going to be out here."
The Ricebirds will travel to Ganado Saturday for their second meet of the season. El Campo will take on smaller sized schools and get a chance to show its 4-A power.
"It's usually a bunch of teams," Johnson said. "Yoakum will be there and Cuero is usually there. It's a lot of smaller schools. It's a good meet for us because we've just got to put together what we have and go compete.
"This Saturday, we just want to try to get all the relays together. I'm trying to find who's going to be the best at second leg, third leg or anchor and also to be able to compete. We're putting it all together looking for district and regionals."
