Board members serving on the Heritage Center committee gathered Thursday, Feb. 28 to offi- cially break ground for the renovation of the former Northside Senior Citizen Center.

After a few years of planning and fundraising, the much-anticipated

project has begun with the gutting of

the facility to create an attractive

and functional center for El Campo's older citizens.

Various programs will be available for those ages 50 and older.

Present for the ground-breaking ceremony were Frank Schmermund of BLS Construction and board members Hubert Kaiser, Bill Munns, Carolyn

Goelzer, Tom Perilloux, Dottie Collins, Joe Tom Davis, Rita Radley, Terri Mehrens Jones and Teresa McNew. Also serving on the board, but unable to attend, were Diana Melanson, Gordon Sorrel, Gloria Marek and Norelle Lundy. Ken Shanks is the architect.

The facility has a projected finish date of mid-summer. Operation will depend on that date, as well as facilitating

the use of volunteers to run the

center.

According to Heritage Center President McNew, the board is currently forming committees to assist with programs and services to be offered at the center.

"Everyone has a talent that can be utilized," McNew said.

"Anyone interested in being a volunteer or chairing or serving on a committee can contact Rita Radley at 543- 8360."

Some of the services and committees are membership drive, physical fitness, garden, administration, volunteer coordination and the Tell-AFriend and Neighbor Helping Neighbor programs.
