Sophomores make strong season start

Ricebird sophomores made a 2-2 start to the baseball season after games against St. Joseph, Columbia, Katy and Waller.

EC vs. St. Joseph

The Ricebirds pulled away with a 12-4 win Feb. 18 over the Flyers at Victoria. The team combined for 15 hits and 5 walks.

Coy Radley led El Campo's offense with 3 hits on 5 atbats. He scored 3 runs, hit for 2 RBIs and used speed to earn triple on the night.

Colton Kallina, Trey Krpec, Wes Smolik and Tanner Howard all hit 2 RBIs against the Flyers.

Howard was the winning pitcher for the 'Birds.

EC. vs. Columbia

Ethan Kinder took the mound for the Ricebirds and helped El Campo to an 11-2 victory over the Roughnecks Feb. 22. The game was the 'Birds' first of the El Campo Junior Varsity Tournament.

The team totaled 7 hits and 9 walks and was led by some strong offensive production.

Krpec hit a team-high 2 RBIs while Smolik earned 1 RBI.

Radley, Kallina and Krpec each scored 2 runs and George Olsovsky got the big hit of the game with a double.

El Campo lost to Katy 17-5 and Waller 9-7 to make a 2-2 record on the season.

The Ricebirds recently finished second in the El Campo sophomore tournament.
