Pack 196 Scouts hosts Pinewood Derby races
Top two places now advance to district level of competition

Racing To Win Cub Scout Pack 196 held its annual Pinewood Derby Race Saturday, March 1 at Don Davis Motor Company. A total of 30 cars participated in the race. The overall fastest car belonged to Webelos II Scout Hunter Merta. Other winners who placed in the top three places in their division are (row one, l-r) Ryder Merta, second; Jason Foster, third; James Anderson, first; (row two) Walter Lilie, first; Justin Baros, third; Tyler Williamson, second; (row three) Ryon Korenek, first; Harrison Linzza, second; (row four) Sydney Escamilla, third; Brent Rothbauer, second; Hunter Merta, first and fastest overall; Chase Stary, first; and Preston Brandes, second. Pack 196 Cub Scouts competed in the Pinewood Derby Race, bringing home trophies for first through third place finishes in each division. Thirty Scouts and adults competed. The top three winners for each are listed in the respective order from first through third:

Tiger Scouts - James Anderson, Ryder Merta and Jason Foster;

Wolf Scouts - Walter Lilie, Tyler Williamson and Justin Baros;

Bear Scouts - Ryon Korenek and Harrison Linzza;

Webelos I - Chase Stary, Brent Rothbauer and Sydney Escamilla; and

Webelos II - Hunter Merta and Preston Brandes.

The pro division, which consists of siblings, parents and other adults, had seven competitors. A first place trophy was awarded to Cubmaster Dawn Merta in this division.

Several other awards were presented prior to the start of the race. They included: first car to check in - Kane Ondrias; largest car - Mason Smith; smallest car - Harrison Linzza; most patriotic car - Jason Foster; best paint job - Hunter Merta; best vehicle not a car - James Anderson; most original design - Scott Malachowski; most colorful car - Sydney Escamilla; fastest looking car - Walter Lilie; best Scout theme - Ryder Merta; judge's favorite - Preston Brandes; and last car to check in - Scott Malachowski.

Scouts who placed first and second in their rank and division will advance to the Brahman District race in Bay City on March 29.
