LHS lady 'lifters eye state championship
Powerlifting is a long-time strength for the Hornets and Lady Hornets. Louise's strength may come from its athletes' approach to lifting weights. Intense workouts for athletes in all sports have led to Louise's weight-lifting power. It is as if the Hornets and Lady Hornets' success in powerlifting is a byproduct of a solid athletic program. "We don't just specifically train powerlifters," said powerlifting coach Mark Stevens. "I don't agree with that. Our girls all lift weights the same way whether they're in off-season or powerlifting. Then after school or before school, we focus on more of the powerlifting stuff." The Hornets buy into powerlifting as an institution. Boys participate as individuals in a program, but the Lady Hornets have made powerlifting into more of a team atmosphere. "We really preach this with our boys - that we're all powerlifters because we all do the same workout during our athletic period," Stevens said. "Then we just take 11 boys and show off on Saturdays. Our girls are a little bit different. "Our boys understand that we mix and match and take different boys. It's a team thing, but it's more of a program thing. Our girls, we have a really tight-knit group of girls. They set the goal at the beginning of the year that they wanted to win the state championship this year. They've been working really hard." To claim the Class A state title, Stevens said all seven girls will have to earn high rankings. "They've got a good chance," Stevens said. "What we feel like we have to do is, everybody has got to medal. In other words, they all have to be in the top five. In addition to that, there's probably three girls that are sitting first or second right now. They don't necessarily have to get first, but they need to get first or second. "Gabby Foster is lifting in the 114-lbs. class and going into the state meet, she is ranked second and she's a sophomore. In the 198-lbs. class, we have a freshman named Cheyenne Collins who, going into the state meet, is ranked third. Then we have another freshman, named Jamie DeLeon, who is in the heavy-weight division. Going into the sate meet, she is ranked second. All those girls, we're thinking, need to go first or second probably." Junior Amber Perez and sophomores Kristin Haynes, Samira Villeda and Jecenia Guevera do not face quite as much pressure. Stevens said he hopes they will all finish in the top five. Stevens said powerlifting requires a lot of early hours throughout the year, but with one meet left, the load gets lighter. "This time of year, I always think that rest is more important," he said. "We're not going to gain a whole lot of strength between now and the time it is for us to lift. We work on more technical stuff. We don't go up a lot from our totals at regionals to state. We just kind of hope to get the same total." Joining the girls at the state level is C.J. Clements. He will compete at Abilene March 29. Clements was the only Hornets out of six to qualify for the state meet at regionals.
