Kenny Murchison, a detective from the Travis County Sheriff's Department, applies roll-on acid to etch vehicle identification numbers on the windows of a sport-utility vehicle. The VIN etching event, hosted by the Sheriff's Combined Auto Task Force, was held Thursday at the El Campo Fire Training Center and provided the free service to 64 cars and trucks. Wharton County Sheriff's Office is one of 17 counties involved in the task force, which provides public awareness, highway interdiction, training for fellow law enforcers and even stages "bait" trailers to lure vehicle thieves into a trap.
