Lady 'Birds blast Bay City with mighty bats Bay City proved to be no contest for El Campo's softball team Friday. The Lady 'Birds moved to 2-0 in district play with a 12-1 win. After a quiet first inning, El Campo exploded in the second to take charge of the game. The first batter earned an out, but Emily Bergstrom started the Lady 'Birds scoring effort with a single. Taryn Socha came in to run for her. Kristi Michaelsen gave a nice effort to send Socha over to second base on a sacrifice hit. Michaelsen was out at first, but a string of doubles was about to start. With two outs, Lindsey Marik hit a double to center field and sent Socha home for the first run of the game. Anna Raun followed with a single to score Marik and put the Lady 'Birds up 2-0. Brittney Oates hit a shot to left field and earned a double and an RBI. Angela Fiala followed with a double and scored Oates. Alexis Cooper hit the fourth double of the inning to bring Fiala in and give El Campo a 5-0 lead. Danielle Smith drew a walk in the next at-bat and Gabby Macias earned the final RBI of the inning with an appropriate double. Macias' hit sailed into center field and scored Cooper. The next at-bat was the final out of the inning and the Lady 'Birds enjoyed a 6-0 lead. Bay City responded with a run in the bottom of the third, but it was their only score of the game. El Campo, on the other hand, had only started its offensive output. The Lady 'Birds scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Cooper hit a single with two outs and Chelsea Solis came in to run the bases for her. She stole second and set up a score. Smith followed Cooper's hit with a double and brought Solis in for the run. Smith scored later on a Bay City fielding error and put El Campo up 8-0. Raun scored a run in the fifth inning two grow the Lady 'Birds' lead. She reached base on a fielder's choice and Oates followed with an RBI single to give El Campo a 9-0 lead. Smith scored another run in the sixth inning. She hit a lead-off single and moved around the bases to score the 10th run of the game. The scoring run ended in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of Lady 'Bird runs. Raun and Oates hit into outs to start the inning, but Fiala connected for a single and Cooper followed with a double to set up scores. A blast to center field by Smith brought in both runs to end the bombardment. The Lady 'Birds will travel to Victoria today for a game with St. Joseph. The girls only have three more games before they finish the season at home. Foster, Seven Lakes and Lamar will end El Campo's road games in a little over a week. Foster calls for El Campo March 25 in the next district game. |
