Louise-Hillje Chamber of Commerce Banquet The Louise-Hillje Chamber of Commerce hosts its 49th Annual Banquet Thursday, March 27 at St. Andrew Parish Hall in Hillje. Social hour and silent auction begin at 6 p.m. Dinner is served at 7 p.m. Entertainment is Rodney Rash, hypnotist. Chicken Fried Steak Plate Fundraiser St. Robert's Youth Group is selling tickets for chicken fried steak plates. Pick up Thursday, March 27 from 5- 6:30 p.m. at Country Pride. Cost per plate is $6.50. If you would like to buy tickets or donate, call 979-253-8233.

Water Safety Instructor Course A Water Safety Instructor Course provides the knowledge and the training to be a successful instructor and includes general water safety and emergency procedures, swimming safety for infants and preschoolers, teaching methods and the Progressive Learn-to-Swim Levels. Prerequisites: 16 years of age with the ability to perform several different strokes. Course is 34 hours, including pre-course swim and Fundamentals of Instructor Training. WSI Course will be at Bay City High School Pool on Friday, March 28 from 5-9, Saturday, March 29 from 9-5, Sunday, March 30 from 9-5, Saturday, April 5 from 9-5 and Sunday, April 6 from 9-5. CPR For The Professional RR Classes CPR for the Professional Rescuer recertification classes are Saturday, March 29 from 5-9 p.m. The cost is $40 if you bring your book and pocket mask. If not, there's an additional cost of $10 for the pocket mask and/or $15 for the book. Registration fees are payable by check or money order. Registration fee must be received no later than 48 hours prior to start of class. Call the American Red Cross office at 979-245-3056 for information.

Crescent Ex-Students Biennial Reunion Crescent Ex-students Biennial Reunion is Saturday, March 29 at the Wharton County Fair Grounds from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. All ex-students, faculty and friends are invited, including those from Lakeview, Jones Creek and Pecha schools. KC Host Annual Spring Picnic Knights of Columbus Council 2490 hosts its annual Spring Picnic Sunday, March 30 . Barbecued chicken dinner plates, dine-in or to-go for $6.50. Serving begins at 11 a.m. Free dance from 1-5 p.m. by Texas Sound Check band. Auction, big raffle, cakewalk, kiddie rides and games will complete the day.

WCYF Little Miss/Little Mr. Contest Any boy or girl between the ages of 6 and 8 years old as of May 1 is eligible for the Wharton County Youth Fair Little Miss/Little Mr. Contest. TUESDAY, APRIL 1

PK/Kindergarten Registration For 2008-2009 Kindergarten and pre-K new students for the 2008-2009 school year can come by Myatt Elementary to preregister Tuesday, April 1 from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, April 2 and Thursday, April 3 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. or Wednesday, April 9 from 1-6 p.m. New students must be age 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2008. Bring a birth certificate, shot record and Social Security card. For pre-K, bring an income record for the last month.

American Red Cross Host CPR & FAB Classes The American Red Cross hosts CPR and First Aid courses next month. Adult CPR is Tuesday, April 1 from 6-10 p.m.; Infant and Child CPR is Tuesday, April 8 from 5-10 p.m.; and First Aid Basics is Tuesday, April 15 from 6-10 p.m. Classes are at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 3000 Ninth in Bay City. Each course costs $22, payable by check or money order. Payment and applications due no later than 48 hours prior to start of the class. Minimum of six participants required. Juneteenth Celebration Meeting for 2008 A Juneteenth celebration meeting is 4 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at Mount Olive Baptist Church for all who are interested in volunteering. Musical groups, soloists, dancers, rappers, country or Latino musicians, or anyone who wants to perform or be involved is welcome to attend. Juneteenth is not just a celebration for African-Americans, but is a celebration in which everyone can take part. Louise Hillje Clean-Up Day April 5 Louise-Hillje Beautification Organization will have a dump site at 3rd and Market streets across from the fire station on Saturday, April 5. They accept plastic, paper, aluminum, glass, small metal objects, and household debris. They do not accept large appliances, furniture, mattresses, batteries, tires and motor oil. Rice Farmers Coop at 106 Market in El Campo accepts old tires for a fee starting at $2.50. The county brush pile in Louise, located by the old county barn, will be open for tree limbs and lumber. If your group or organization would like to conduct a project, contact the Louise-Hillje Chamber at 979- 648-2615 to tell them of your activity so they can present your group with a certificate of appreciation and add you to the list of organizations helping on clean-up day. Donations are appreciated to help pay for the dumpster that costs $180 per load. Large trash bags are available at the water office for the clean-up. Volunteers are needed for the clean-up campaign.

'Hope After Shattered Dreams' Meeting Hope After Shattered Dreams ministry has begun for the El Campo community. Anyone who has experienced a loss resulting from, but not limited to death, divorce, job or deteriorating health is welcome to attend. Meetings are the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the El Campo Church of Christ, 315 E. Calhoun. The next meeting is Monday, April 7. For information call 543-4279.

St. Philip Sponsors 'Run For Excellence' The first Run For Excellence to benefit St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Parish and the St. Philip Pioneer athletic department is Saturday, April 5 at St. Philip's football field. Race registration is 7:30-8:30 a.m.; the 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:45 a.m. and the 1-mile Family Run begins at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $20 per person. Forms available at the school or parish office. WCJC Prospective Student Meeting Wharton County Junior College representatives will be at the Northside Education Center April 7 from 4-6 p.m. to meet with prospective students about educational programs, degree plans and financial aid for the next school year. Anyone interested in attending WCJC in the summer or fall may come by to have their questions answered.

Morning Lifeguards Needed At ECAC Lifeguards are needed by the El Campo Aquatic Center, especially during the 6-11 a.m. shift, Monday through Friday. Guard classes will be taught March 24-30. Applicants must be no younger than 15 to apply, and adult applicants are being encouraged. For information call Stephanie at 543-1468.

Ricebird Booster Club Meeting Ricebird Booster Club meets Monday, April 7 at 6 p.m. Election of officers will be elected at this meeting. The meeting will take place in the weight room classroom.

Veterans Service Officer Hours The office of Wharton County Veterans Service Officer Harvey H. Stelzel Jr. is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays through April 30. Office hours are 7:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. The office is located at 1017 N. Alabama Road in Wharton. Phone 532-1311.

Spay/Neuter Assistance Available The Matagorda County SPCA has a program to help financially disadvantaged people in Wharton, Jackson, Matagorda and the southern part of Colorado County get their dogs or cats spayed or neutered. Please call the SPCA at 979-323-8787 for information or for an application, or to help with the effort.
