Green Thumbs hear program on herbs Members of the Green Thumb Garden Club met last week. Carolyn Goelzer called the meeting to order. Questionnaires were passed out and will be due at the next meeting. A nominating committee was appointed to select officers for next year. There being no further business, the meeting was turned over to Pam Nash of Wharton who gave a program on herbs such as basil and society garlic. She said some believe basil will bring one wealth if carried in their pocket. It is also given as a gift of good luck for a new homeowner. It can be used in sandwiches, soups and salads. Both basil and society garlic prefer hot sun. Society garlic is also edible. It makes for a beautiful border in flower beds. Use the minced leaves for seasoning soups, stews or salads. An interesting fact about herbs is that unlike fruit, you don't have to wait for them to ripen. If there are leaves on the plant, they are ready to use. Herbs also do not rot when left on the plant. You need to harvest sparingly. Nash mentioned she has a booth at the Farmers Market and will be happy to answer anyone's questions about herbs and how to grow them. After the program there was a drawing for an azalea bush brought by Anita Christensen. It was won by Carolyn Goelzer. Florence Adamitis donated a plaque to hang on the wall, which was won by Glenda Wendt. The next meeting will be at Janet Holub's home with a tour of her yard on April 16. |
