Solomon claims medal at TSU meet, EC faces top track teams
In a field of over 100 schools, including powerhouses like Hightower, Dallas Skyline, Beaumont Ozen and Duncanville, El Campo held its own. Shae Solomon had the best outing of all the Lady 'Birds. She claimed a medal in discus with a second-place finish on a 128-foot throw. Solomon also finished sixth overall in the shot put. She made a toss of 37-5 for the top-10 placing. Head Coach Alice Barron said she was excited that Solomon had such a strong outing amidst strong competition, though she was unable to watch Solomon throw. The shot put and discus events were moved to Rice University because of lack of space on the TSU campus. Word quickly spread, however, of Solomon's great achievements and Barron said she was thrilled. Along with Solomon's outing, Shelby May had a nice showing in the 800- meter run. She finished her race in 2:35 to finish 16th out of several participants. Barron said she was proud of her team and felt like the Lady 'Birds gained solid experience that will be beneficial later on in the season. No other individual information was available from Saturday's relays. Today, the girls track team is in Columbus in preparation for the upcoming district track meet held at Seven Lakes in Katy Thursday and Friday. The Ricebirds ran at Brazosport High School's campus Friday and will join the Lady 'Birds at the district track meet. Both of El Campo's teams have plans after the district meet. The girls will travel to Brenham April 18 for a regional qualifying meet and both will compete at Huntsville at the Regional tournament April 25 and 26. The state meet is scheduled for May 9 at Austin. |
