Weight loss group reinstates member TOPS #TX 1281, El Campo recognized Elaine Rowland Tuesday, March 25 for their achievement of KOPS (Keeping Off Pounds Sensibly) following a 15-year loss of that status. Rowland was chapter queen and area queen in 1991. This status signifies the person who had the greatest weight loss from her date of joining to reach goal weight and one who attains the level of KOPS. Following weigh-in and morning business, the meeting was adjourned to the home of Margaret Montello for the reinstatement. Members entering the home were greeted by a stern "Big Squaw." With arms folded, she stood watch over the campfire of artificial light, sticks and burlap strips. A macramé wall hanging decorated with a handmade Dorothy Duckett Indian maiden doll attached to it hung beside the squaw. Rowland was called forward as the squaw placed an Indian blanket over her shoulders while reminding her of her lost KOPS status and her perseverance and determination to regain status. The reinstatement continued with others in Indian dress to circle the table as Rowland and the membership were reminded of the quote "circle of show... united to achieve our goals. A circle never ends, is continuous, a ring that binds us together." Rowland was then presented with the KOPS reinstatement pink, a rose and her very own "Big Squaw" outfit. TOPS is an international, nonprofit weight loss and support organization. Locally they meet every Tuesday from 8:30- 10 a.m. at the Northside Education Center. Visitors are welcome. |
