Holub Blood Drive-Marrow/Stem Cell Drive The Dwight Holub Blood Drive-Marrow/Stem Cell Donor Registry Drive is 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. today at the Commercial State Bank Gold room across from H-E-B. Holub has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is in need of a stem cell transplant. Even if you can't give blood, you may be on the National Marrow/ Stem Cell Donor Registry, a database that helps find a match for people like Dwight. Potential donors simply give a cheek swab and fill out a brief health questionnaire. A person of any race, ethnicity or gender, age 18-60 and who meets donation health guidelines can be a donor. 8th Grade Hosts Car Wash Fundraiser Class of 2008, 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip students will have a car wash today at McDonald's. Disclaimer: The 8th grade Washington trip and/or fundraisers are not sponsored by St. Philip Catholic School.

'March On Austin' Stop The TTC/Tolls March on Austin is today at 12:15 p.m. with line up by 11:45 a.m. The rally is from 1-4 p.m. Staging area for the march are parking lots at the corner of Hwy. 343/Ceasar Chavez/Red River streets, one block west of I-35. Speakers include Rep. Ron Paul, Va. Rep. Virgil Goode, Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur, Okla. Sen. Randy Brodon and many Texas state legislators who fighting against the Trans- Texas Corridor and tollways.

Gulf Coast Panhellenic Sorority Workshop If you are college-bound female and interested in becoming a member of a university sorority, join Gulf Coast Panhellenic for their second annual sorority workshop today at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Wharton, 1717 Pioneer. The free event includes an educational forum on the most frequently asked questions about the sorority membership and the recruitment process. Juneteenth Celebration Meeting for 2008 A Juneteenth celebration meeting is today at Mount Olive Baptist Church for all who are interested in volunteering. Musical groups, soloists, dancers, rappers, country or Latino musicians, or anyone who wants to perform or be involved is welcome to attend. Juneteenth is not just a celebration for African-Americans, but is a celebration in which everyone can take part. Louise Hillje Clean-Up Day Today Louise-Hillje Beautification Organization will have a dump site at 3rd and Market streets across from the fire station today, April 5. They accept plastic, paper, aluminum, glass, small metal objects, and household debris. They do not accept large appliances, furniture, mattresses, batteries, tires and motor oil. Rice Farmers Coop at 106 Market in El Campo accepts old tires for a fee starting at $2.50. The county brush pile in Louise, located by the old county barn, will be open for tree limbs and lumber. If your group or organization would like to conduct a project, contact the Louise-Hillje Chamber at 979-648- 2615 to tell them of your activity so they can present your group with a certificate of appreciation and add you to the list of organizations helping on clean-up day. Donations are appreciated to help pay for the dumpster that costs $180 per load. Large trash bags are available at the water office for the clean-up. Volunteers are needed for the clean-up campaign.

St. Philip Sponsors 'Run For Excellence' The first Run For Excellence to benefit St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Parish and the St. Philip Pioneer athletic department is today at St. Philip's football field. Race registration is 7:30-8:30 a.m.; the 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:45 a.m. and the 1-mile Family Run begins at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $20 per person. Forms available at the school or parish office. CDA Tri-District Meeting Catholic Daughters of the Americas from Districts 14, 29 and 34 Tri-District meet Sunday, April 6 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3610 N. Ben Wilson in Victoria. 'Hope After Shattered Dreams' Meeting Hope After Shattered Dreams ministry has begun for the El Campo community. Anyone who has experienced a loss resulting from, but not limited to death, divorce, job or deteriorating health is welcome to attend. Meetings are the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the El Campo Church of Christ, 315 E. Calhoun. The next meeting is Monday, April 7. For information call 543-4279.

Funding Resources for Your Small Business A Funding Resources for Your Small Business workshop is Tuesday, April 8 from 5:30-8 p.m. at Northside Education Center. The event is co-sponsored by the City Development Corporation of El Campo, Prairie View A&M University and the University of Houston/Coastal Plains Small Business Development Center. Business owners or those thinking of starting a business can meet people who can help them complete a funding application. Registration is free but seating is limited. Call 543-6750 to ensure a seat, because seating for the workshop is limited.

Fundraiser For March Of Dimes Stephanie Brown-Powers will host a fried chicken plate fundraiser to raise money for the Big 5K Walk/Run in Houston on Sunday, April 27. Taxpayer Information Presentation Meeting A taxpayer information presentation shows citizens how to file exemptions and renditions and how to protest appraisals. Speaker will be Wharton County Chief Appraiser Tylene Gamble on Wednesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. at Silver Wings, 817 West Loop. The focus is on taxpayers rights, responsibilities and remedies. 'Over The River And Through The Woods' Play The state-bound St. Philip Catholic School One Act Play will present "Over the River and Through the Woods" Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the ECHS auditorium. Pizza bythe slice and soft drinks sold at 6 p.m. in the courtyard. Admission is a $5 donation at the door. This is the only fundraiser for the one-act play program.

'Buy One Get One Free' Book Fair The El Campo Branch Library hosts a Scholastic buy one, get one free Book Fair Saturday, April 12 through Saturday, April 19 during regular library hours. American Legion/Auxiliary Meeting American Legion Craig-Harriss Post 251 and its Ladies Auxiliary will hold their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, April 15 at the hall beginning with a social at 6:30 p.m. and a meal will be served at 7:15. Ladies Auxiliary members are asked to bring desserts.

IMUD Yard of The Month Contest The Isaacson Municipal Utility District will award its first "IMUD Yard of the Month" honor on April 16. The contest will be conducted monthly and is open to all IMUD members. Renters are welcome to participate as well as property owners. The winner will receive a $20 credit toward the next water bill and results will be published in the El Campo Leader-News and on the IMUD Web site. Members of the board of directors are donating $20 award each month. This credit will not be taken from IMUD funds.

Tests For Acceleration/Credit The El Campo Independent School District offers exams for acceleration, credit by examination, in all grades for students with no prior instruction at that level or in a particular subject. To achieve acceleration, students in kindergarten through grade 5 must: (1) score 90 percent on criterion-referenced tests for language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, (2) be recommended by the campus principal and (3) have written parental approval for the acceleration. Students in grade 6 through 12 must score 90 percent on a criterion-referenced test for the applicable course. Register with your principal by April 21. Exams are May 6, 7, and 8.

Veterans Service Officer Hours The office of Wharton County Veterans Service Officer Harvey H. Stelzel Jr. is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays through April 30. Office hours are 7:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. The office is located at 1017 N. Alabama Road in Wharton. Phone 532-1311.

Spay/Neuter Assistance Available The Matagorda County SPCA has a program covering Wharton, Jackson, Matagorda and the southern part of Colorado County to help people who can't afford to spay/neuter their dogs/cats.
