Two killed in Hungerford rollover Law enforcement officials believe speed was a factor in a one-car accident that claimed the lives of two Houston residents on U.S. 59 earlier this week. Department of Public Safety officials said Joyce Linwood Brown, 89, of Houston, was traveling at an "unsafe speed" when she lost control of her 2002 Toyota just before 7 p.m. Tuesday. DPS said Brown lost control of the vehicle - which was traveling in the southbound lanes of 59 - and went off the right side of the roadway. She overcorrected, officials said, causing the Toyota to overturn several times. The accident occurred about 4.1 miles north of Hungerford. Brown, a retired Houston resident, was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where she was pronounced dead. She was wearing a seat belt, DPS said. A passenger, 94-year-old Stanley Chalmers Brown, also of Houston, died at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. He was pronounced dead by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Cindy Kubicek. He was not wearing a seat belt, DPS said. A third passenger, 59-year-old Craig Stanley Brown of Houston, was taken to Hermann Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. DPS said he was wearing a seat belt. The accident was investigated by Trooper Royce Korenek and Sgt. Danny Terronez of the Pierce DPS station as well as several other troopers from Rosenberg. |
