EC trustees to review ECHS building plans
By SHANNON CRABTREE scrabtree@leader-news.com

Reports covering ongoing construction work on the El Campo High School campus will be reviewed by the school board when they meet Tuesday.

El Campo's Polasek Construction has started a $3.115 million upgrade and expansion of the science building bringing it up to modern building code standards, adding an elevator and boys and girls ADA-compliant bathrooms on both floors, and two classroom/labs.

The interior demolition in the science building is complete and the old gym knockdown is scheduled to start this weekend.

Construction is scheduled for completion by Dec. 31, 2008.

Also in the works is a $1.5 million renovation of Ricebird stadium replacing the track, adding drainage and putting down an artificial turf playing field.

That project is well under way and is expected to be complete in early June.

Other items for trustee consideration include:

• A request for the creation of two new positions in the district. Administration is asking the board to consider another high school English teacher as well as the creation of an elementary math "facilitiator."

• The possibility of video taping board meetings will be considered. The city of El Campo routinely videos its sessions which are later played on the Mid-Coast Cablevision access channel as well as being available for review.

ECISD does not tape its sessions currently.

• A discussion of the high school alternative learning program is planned.

The El Campo school board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom, 700 W. Norris. The meeting is open to the public with time designated for citizen comment.
