Green Thumb members share gardening tips

Thirteen members and guest Betty Leach attended the Green Thumb Garden Club's monthly meeting Wednesday.

The minutes and reports were given and approved. Florence Adamitis read a poem entitled "God's Treasurers on Earth." She then offered a plaque with the inscription "Forget health foods, I need all the preservatives I can get." Margie Swoboda won the drawing for the plaque.

Carolyn Goelzer opened the meeting for announcements. There will be a free patriotic concert at First Baptist Church at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 26.

Goelzer said to stop by and look at the progress on the Heritage Center. She reminded members the club had paid for some of the landscaping that will be done.

Glenda Wendt gave the horticulture report on an altermanthera, also known as party time. It likes shade and very seldom freezes. It has lavender foliage. Irene Nohavitza won the drawing for the plant.

The program for the morning was roll call of the membership, as each one gave gardening tips or asked questions about their gardening problems. Some of the tips were: you can start hibiscus from cuttings; spray vinegar on you to help keep off the mosquitos when gardening; 3-in-1 Broadcast is very good to keep fire ants from coming back; cypress is a very good mulch.

The next meeting will be at Pat Hoelscher's May 21. I will be a salad luncheon with members bringing the salads and officers offering desserts. New officers for 2008-09 will be voted on at this meeting.
