Wharton AD quits after one season

      Wharton ISD Superintendent Don Hillis confirmed Friday afternoon that Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Gary Van Sant has tendered his resignation. The Leader-News learned of this information last Friday, but was unable to confirm it. Van Sant refused to comment.

Lady 'Birds one win away from celebrating

      Post-season celebrations were put on hold Tuesday as the Lady 'Birds lost a surprising game to Seven Lakes. A win would have put El Campo's softball team in the playoffs, but the 3-0 loss means the team still has one win to go.

      Wharton, Boling and East Bernard all received spots on the El Campo Leader-News and Wharton Journal- Spectator All-Wharton County boys basketball teams as well as El Campo and Louise players. The top award from the East county schools went to Boling Freshman Dennis Hemphill.

Ricebirds' pitching, defense drains Seven Lakes
      The Ricebirds earned a big win in Katy Tuesday. El Campo's bats outlasted the Spartans while starting pitcher Matthew Hamman gave a great performance. The Ricebirds held Seven Lakes in check while the offense clicked just enough for a 4-2 win.
