DAR celebrates 94th birthday Members of Comfort Wood Chapter, Texas Society of the Daughters of the American Revoluntion, celebrated their 94th birthday on Friday, April 18 at Pat-A-Cake on the Square in Wharton. After the lunch members were served birthday cake. Each member was given a copy of the 1974 newspaper article, when they celebrated their 50 year birthday. On April 20, 1914, Comfort Wood Chapter was organized in Wharton to serve Wharton and surrounding counties. The mission statement of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is: to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. "Our chapter believes it is our duty to embrace the legacy which we have inherited from our forefathers and to encourage a strong sense of patriotism among our fellow citizens," Regent Hazel Foltyn of El Campo said. DAR was founded October 11, 1890 and incorporated in 1896 by an Act of Congress. "Our motto is: 'God, Home and Country,'" she said. Memberships qualifications are: any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible.
