LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Little League appreciates help Editor, the Leader-News: The El Campo Little League board would like to send out its sincerest appreciation to all those who helped in making the BBQ dinner and Raffle a great success. Once again El Campo has shown why this is such a great place to live and raise a family. El Campo Little League is solely a volunteer organization and largely dependent upon donations and fundraising to keep and maintain the fields. We have just updated the lights on the softball and pee-wee fields, and are looking forward to the renovation of the American and National League fields. These are costly and very necessary plans for the future of El Campo Little League and its players. We look forward to your continued support for the continued success of El Campo Little League and its current and future players. El Campo Little League Board Lorie Van Gorp - Secretary Student recalls Our Lady fire Editor, the Leader-News: The article about the fire at Our Lady of the Lake University was a very touching story. I am currently a student at the Lake and was in my dorm room when the fire started. I live on the east side of the university and was completely in awe when I saw the fire on my TV. I just couldn't believe it. My phone started ringing off the hook because my family was trying to reach me to make sure I was okay. During one of the conversations, the electricity in the dormitory just completely shut off. I was scared because there had been some events before the fire leading up to it. A few others, who were in the dorm, ran into the hallways and we were told to evacuate the building. None of us new what was going on and honestly, thought it was a bomb scare. The previous day, university officials found a letter in a bathroom saying there was a bomb on campus and it could be anywhere. They immediately evacuated the university and San Antonio Police Department came with their bomb squad. After about an hour or so, we were cleared to go back into the buildings. Nothing had been found and it was considered a hoax. The next day, however, many of us were thinking otherwise. About a couple of hours before the fire started, there was a rumor going around that someone had started a fire in a trash can in one of the dorm halls. Later it was confirmed that it had indeed happened. Thankfully, it was put out before any major damage occurred. Then the fire in the Main Building broke out. Once we evacuated, a friend and I went to the library and saw everything. The fire looked so surreal. Neither of us could believe it because we were in that building just a few hours before. It was a sad thing to see. The Lake is my second home and to see it burning was just devastating. Most of the students were gathered on the lawn of the library, some in tears, others in shock. After reading the article, I agreed with Sr. Rosalie about God having a plan for us all. During the prayer service, President Pollack said that no matter what happens we are going to look to the future and not let this take us down. Today, if you looked at the front of Main, you do notice a few things that look different, but one thing that sticks out is the statue of Our Lady, Mary. She still stands strong and looks over the University as she has always done. I just ask for everyone to keep the entire student community in their prayers. Alicia Aguilar Registry appreciates volunteers Editor, the Leader-News: On behalf of the Bone Marrow/Stem Cell National Registry we would like to thank all those who volunteered to participate last May 3, potentially saving numerous lives. Also, a special thank you to Bob and David Melanson for the use of Commercial State Bank's Gold Room. El Campo is in deed a special place. The Dwight Holub Family Drivers need to mind cyclists Editor, the Leader-News: I have been riding my bicycle in and around the neighborhoods of El Campo for the past few months. I have noticed that many of the residents are not familiar with having to share the road with us peddlers. Please realize that we are looking to you for information about your next move. We need to see your turn signal, so we can anticipate your next move. When a car approaches us from behind, we move over as much as we can on the city streets. The streets of El Campo are not designed with us in mind. Let me assure you, if the gasoline prices keep going the direction they are going, you will definitely see more of us. This healthier, more efficient way of getting around town is a reality that we must all deal with and expect to grow. My concern is that someone is not going to realize we have a right to be on the road with automobiles and someone is going to get hurt. Please keep us in mind as you drive around town. To the great people who have given us the right of way, I certainly thank you and respect the fact that you are respectful of us. Thank you, Connie Lisembee |
