Fundraising walk to benefit the needy
"As Vincentians, we see the personal tragedy of poverty first-hand and do much to alleviate it," conference treasurer Terri Beltran said. "We are dedicated to ending poverty in America and in Wharton County. The St. Robert Bellarmine Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul needs your help in this effort. The walk is a fun-filled way that communities across America can come together in support of the poor." The event will allow community members from all walks of life across the country to participate simultaneously to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the nation's poor and to raise significant funds for use in direct service to the poor. "More Americans than ever are living below the official poverty line," Beltran said. "We need to generate awareness about the Friends of the Poor Walk to recruit walkers and raise significant funds. We invite the whole community to come out for this spectacular event." The walk, set for Saturday, Sept. 27, is being held to coincide with the international celebration of the 175th anniversary of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. "Now is the time for individuals, community groups and corporations to commit their participation," Beltran said. "Join us at this event to celebrate the poor and honor those caring individuals who work directly in the community to bring about healthy change for men and women to live and grow as God intended." To participate as a walker, or a corporate sponsor or to pledge to a local walker or a volunteer, call Beltran at 648-2558, or visit www.svdpfriendsofthepoorwalk. org. Once the site is opened, click on the friends of the poor logo, then choose either: "Become a Walker," Pledge to a Walker" or "Search for a Walker." All pledges will benefit the needy in El Campo and surrounding areas. Registration packets are available at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 512 Tegner, or by contacting Beltran at 979-578-3647 or any conference member. This is a free event. There is a cost for T-shirts and premiums. A portion of the cost will go back to the general Friends of the Poor Fund. "So put on your athletic shoes and hit the pavement for the poor during the local Friends of the Poor Walk." Opening ceremonies will be at 9 a.m. at Friendship Park. Participants will walk a 5K course. |
