Czech Heritage Society introduces new officer slate

Members of the Wharton County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society held their quarterly meeting at the Taiton community Center, Tuesday September 2, 2008. President Edith Molberg led the group in prayer before the meal.

Following the meal, Edith led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dwight Holub introduced Susan Swanson, owner of The Travel Store in El Campo, who gave the program on rules and regulations of airline travel both nationally and internationally. Many of the rules have changed since 9-11, and they have to be followed for the safety of travelers. She was very informative, and entertaining at the same time.

President Molberg called the business meeting to order at 8 p.m. Virginia Balusek offered a motion to donate $1,000 to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. Fred Vacek seconded the motion, and it was accepted by all members. Virginia Balusek will chair the Silent Auction Committee for the Christmas Party. Rita Vanek made a motion to use the money raised at the Silent Auction for a memorial in the name of Kenneth and Ethel Meek to be given to the Cultural Center in La Grange. The motion was seconded and accepted by all members.

Frank Milder introduced the new slate of officers for 2009- 2010. They are as follows:

• Secretary: Jean McAskill
• Treasurer: Rita Vanek

Gladys Rod, John Drozd
Dan Marek and John Drozd gave a report on construction at the Cultural Center in La Grange. The foundation has been poured and construction started on the Museum and Library. Both encourage all to join either with an individual or family membership Individual is $35 and Family is $50 per year.

The upcoming State Meeting is being hosted by the Ellis County Chapter, and will be held November 14th and 15th 2008 at the KJT Hall, on South Paris in Ennis. Edith encouraged all members to attend.

Hattie Drozd reported that she needs items for the Czech Display at the Museum during the month of October.

Martha Marek made a motion to have the meat catered for the Christmas party, seconded by Frank Milder and accepted by all. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
