Garden Club tours butterfly garden Members of the El Campo Garden Club gathered at Myatt Elementary Tuesday, Sept. 2 for a tour of the campus' butterfly garden. Each club member was greeted and escorted by a kindergarten student to a lemonade stand for a cool drink to savor as they toured the garden area. Afterwards, members met in Janel English's classroom where she shared details about the creation of the area. It began with a grant and came to fruition through generous contributions of plants, time and physical labor by community leaders, various school departments and the artistic talents of English and her sister, who painted the mural on the wall above the garden. English explained the students benefit from the garden by learning smells, colors and completing science projects, as well as learning how to cooperate with others and care for the planet. Garden club members continued their meeting at the El Campo Country Club. An informative program about butterfly gardens was given by Patsy Korenek, who encouraged members to "go green" by planting a butterfly garden to replenish the supply of butterflies which have been lost over the years from spraying insecticides and covering land with concrete. The meeting concluded with a meal and fellowship among members. |
