No children were threatened and no one harmed Thursday, but Northside and Myatt elementary campuses locked down after an El Campo man with a sheathed knife was spotted walking nearby.
The man never attempted to approach any children or buildings, El Campo Police Chief Gary Williamson said Tuesday, adding, “he said he was taking a shortcut.”
Passing in front of Northside Elementary around 10:20 a.m., he proceeded to a large unfenced field, too near for the comfort of district officials.
“I am proud of our principals for taking an abundance of caution when it comes to our students and staff,” Superintendent Bob Callaghan said. “In this case it wasn’t needed, but they made the right decision to be precautious.”
El Campo police responded to the scene quickly Thursday morning.
“The knife was in a sheath. He never pulled it out ... he was headed south,” Williamson said.
The man cooperated with police and was arrested on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
