Annual Czech Festival Coming

The 29th annual Czech Kolache Klobase Festival will be 10:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday, June 8 at Riverside Hall, East Bernard. Admission is $8 per person, children 12 and under are free. Sausage/barbecue chicken plate lunch will be available at 11 a.m. There will be music, dancing, arts and crafts, cake walk, raffle and kiddie games. The El Campo Knights of Columbus is having a chicken fried steak dinner, $10 per plate, to-go only, Sunday, June 9 at the KC Hall. Serving will start at 11 a.m. and continue until sold out. Proceeds benefit projects of the KCs.

Benefit Drawing Held for Skate Park

There will be a benefit drawing for the Legends Skateboard Park Improvements 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12 at Legends Skateboard Park. $10,000 is needed to be raised. Tickets are $20 each or six for $100. Need not be present to win. There will be a his and hers Beretta A400 Xplor action wood, a drone package, and a Sunday afternoon skeet shoot for 50 with food and refreshments provided. Get your tickets at City Hall, 315 E. Tomato Competition Coming

Wharton garden club members throughout the county will complete the year with a friendly tomato competition 10 a.m. Thursday, June 13 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 207 Bob O Link, Wharton. Ribbons will be awarded for the tastiest and largest tomatoes grown by members. A pot luck brunch will complete the celebration. The new garden club year will begin the second Thursday in September. For those choosing to join, dues are $10 for the year.

Tractor Pull & Show To Be Held

The Ricebelt 15th Annual Tractor Pull and Show will start 9 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at the American Legion, 2241 Hwy 71 South. There will be $20 hook fees. Truck pulls are scheduled after tractor pulls are complete. There will also be kiddie pedal pulls. Admission is $5, children 8 and under are free. Proceeds for this event benefit the Everyday Heroes Transportation Fund. This helps provide transportation for area veterans to the Houston VA hospital.

Flag Day Ceremony Held

El Campo Elks Lodge will hold a Flag Day ceremony starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at the American Legion, 2241 Hwy. 71 South. All are welcome to attend this free event.

Golf Tournament Held

The annual Ricebird Booster Club Golf Tournament and Raffle will be held Saturday, June 15 at the El Campo Country Club. Join Wharton’s Walkabouts

The Wharton Downtown Business Association is launching Third Thursday Walkabouts. Visitors can engage in a game of checkers or 42, Scrabble or Yahtzee, take in a yoga class, read a book, shop a little, enjoy complimentary wine at select merchant shops or grab a bite to eat. Third Thursday Walkabouts are the third Thursday of each month in downtown Wharton from 4 - 7 p.m. The public is invited, parking is free.

Heritage Center Offers Exercise, Bingo

The Heritage Center, 803 Fahrenthold, a non-profit organization, is open to men and women 50 and older for a fee. The center, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., offers use of exercise machines, “Silver Sneakers” chair exercise sessions for those 63 years and older, pool table, dominoes, lending library, lap top computers, games, bingo and opportunities to volunteer. Covered dish luncheons are held once a month.

The El Campo Branch Library has reading group which is free and open to everyone. Short stories will be read and discussed in Spanish. Bulletin Board is a community service to promote one-time events for nonprofits. The Leader-News requests only one representative submit items with contact information. Items will be edited. Library Books For Sale

All branches of the Wharton County Library System have started updating their children’s collections. Most books that are removed from the collection are given to our Friends of the Library Bookstore, which sells them for 10 cents to the public. The bookstore is located at the Main Library in Wharton, and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
