Funds Raised Helps Art Show

The El Campo Art Association will be selling chances to win various prizes while also raising funds for the organization. They will be at Speedy Stop Fridays and Saturdays, May 24-25 and May 31- June 1. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Funds will be used to buy ribbons and awards for their annual Art Show which will be June 7-9 at the El Campo Civic Center.

Dinner Raises Funds For Cancer Patients

Wharton County Cares, a non-profit organization that assists residents in the county who have cancer with their expenses, is having a pork steak dinner to raise funds. The to-go plates can be picked up from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., Sunday, June 1 at the Taiton Community Center. Bowling League Hosts Tournaments

El Campo Youth Bowling League presents bowling tournaments Saturday, June 1. Adult/child tournament includes three games for $30. Age devisions: 5-8 years, 9-12 years, 13-17 years (Ages as of May 1). Doubles tournament registration is at 1 p.m. and is $50 per team. The tournament starts at 2 p.m. Cash prizes. Forms may be picked up at EC Bowling Center, found on facebook, or ecbowl.com Money raised for these events support the Youth Bowling League and upcoming out of town tournaments. Wharton County Cares will host a Pork Steak Dinner Fundraiser 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sunday, June 2 at Taiton Community Hall, drive through only, for Cancer Survivor Day. Plate will be $10. Registration for Golf Tournament Ends

Register for the 28th annual Ricebird Booster Club golf tournament - 4 man scramble will be held at the El Campo County Club, 1788 CR 351. Cost is $65 per person/ $260 per team. Volunteer for SPOT

Help Wharton County’s homeless dogs by joining SPOT 6 - 7 p.m. Monday, June 3 at the Wharton County Library, 1920 N. Fulton, Wharton. There will be temporary kennels and the dogs housed there need volunteers to spend 30 minutes or so once a day to provide socialization and enrichment. SPOT provides all the materials. Meet other volunteers, learn how to help, and enjoy some refreshments. Email wcspot@hotmail.com with any questions.

2019-2020 School Registration Now Open

Myatt Elementary, 501 W. Webb, 2019-2020 school registration for new Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will be 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday, May 24. Pre-Kindergarten students must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019. Parents or legal guardians need to bring original birth certificate, shot record, social security card, photo ID (parents) and proof of residency. Pre-Kindergarten students will need to bring income records for the last 30 days for household or SNAP letter to qualify. Join Wharton’s Walkabouts

The Wharton Downtown Business Association is launching Third Thursday Walkabouts. Visitors can engage in a game of checkers or 42, Scrabble or Yahtzee, take in a yoga class, read a book, shop a little, enjoy complimentary wine at select merchant shops or grab a bite to eat. Third Thursday Walkabouts are the third Thursday of each month in downtown Wharton from 4 - 7 p.m. The public is invited, parking is free.

Students Can Test Out Of Classes

El Campo students can obtain credit in a course or grade level via “Credit by Examination” without prior instruction in the course(s) being tested. A student in Grades 6-12 can attempt to test out of a class. Tests will be given in Victoria through Region 3 Education Service Center on Wednesday, June 19; Thursday, June 20, Friday; June 21, Wednesday, July 10; Thursday, July 11 and Friday; July 14 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Applications at El Campo High School Counselors’ Office, 600 W. State Health Insurance Assistance Program Counselor Alex Rischan will be at the El Campo Branch Library every third Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. to offer advice and aid in making sense of Medicare. One-on-one counseling will be given at no cost to you.

Heritage Center Offers Exercise, Bingo

The Heritage Center, 803 Fahrenthold, a non-profit organization, is open to men and women 50 and older for a fee. The center, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., offers use of exercise machines, “Silver Sneakers” chair exercise sessions for those 63 years and older, pool table, dominoes, lending library, lap top computers, games, bingo and opportunities to volunteer. Covered dish luncheons are held once a month.

Free English Classes At The Library

Library Books For Sale

All branches of the Wharton County Library System have started updating their children’s collections. Most books that are removed from the collection are given to our Friends of the Library Bookstore, which sells them for 10 cents to the public. The bookstore is located at the Main Library in Wharton, and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They sell children’s books, as well as adult hardback and paperbacks.

Library Introduces New Program

The El Campo Branch Library is starting a new reading group which is free and open to everyone. Short stories will be read and discussed in Spanish. The discussion group will meet the second Saturday of each month at 9:15 a.m. in the El Campo Branch Library’s Mayor’s Room.
