Robert John Opella, 78, passed away peacefully April 25, 2019 in Bay City, and will be missed by his family and friends.

He was born April 27, 1940 in El Campo, Texas to Ernest and Margaret Socha Opella. He grew up attending St. Philip Catholic Church, St. Philip School and graduated from El Campo High School. He attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville and received a bachelor of education degree.

Robert is survived by his sister-in-law, Jeanette Labay Opella of Bay City; nieces, Sharyl McDonald (Nate) of Bay City, Diane Morton (Randy) of Hallettsville and Susan Maguire (Scott) of Beeville; nephew, Lt. Col. (Ret) Dwayne Opella (Gena) of Weatherford; great-nieces and nephews, Taylor Opella Lesmeister (Brian), Jessie Opella, Sydnie Maguire, James McDonald (Callie), John Opella and Kaleb Maguire.

Robert has been living in Bay City since the death of his father and will be missed by many friends. His wit and excellent memory will be fondly remembered.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ernest J. Opella of Bay City and great-nephew, Neil McDonald.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Neret, Rhonda Brown, Hospice and the Legacy Nursing Home and staff in Bay City for their excellent care of Robert.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Matagorda County Museum Endowment Fund (2100 Avenue F, Bay City, Texas 77414) in memory of Robert Opella.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Monday, April 29 at St. Philip Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Rother officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park.
