The El Campo tennis team, following wins at District, will be at the Regional tournament this Thursday and Friday at HEB Tennis Center in Corpus Christi. El Campo’s mixed doubles team and a girls and boys singles will represent the Ricebirds as they look for a chance to punch their way to State.
Junior Olivia Ermis became the District champion in girls singles. For Ermis leading up to Regionals, she wanted to continue doing what she’s been doing.
“(I) just want to get in all practice in that I can like I’ve been doing all year,” Ermis said.
Junior Tyler Stephenson placed second in District in boys singles. Stephenson is making his first trip to Regionals winning four of his five matches at District.
“(At Regionals) I’ll probably try to do better at the net and be more aggressive,” Stephenson said.
The mixed doubles of Blaine Cobb and Jessika Schultz finished second. After a five-hour match, the El Campo duo earned their trip to Regionals. Better placement on the ball is what the mixed doubles team hopes will carry them through Regionals.
“We got really good shots when we aimed alleys,” Schultz said. “It’s a very easy point for us.”
Last year, no one from El Campo advanced to Regionals, now the three teams will be looking to continue the tennis season.
